What are Stem Cells, and why should I care?
It seems like Stem Cells are all the rage these days- you hear everyone talking about them. Well, there’s good reason for that. These cells are pretty impressive. Stem cells are cells that have the potential to develop into different cell types in the body. They can act as a sort of repair system, dividing without limit to replenish other cells. As they divide, the cells have the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function (like a muscle cell, a red blood cell, a brain cell, etc.)(National Institutes of Health). Your stem cells replenish your blood, bone, immune system and other vital tissues and body systems. According to the research, the physical decline associated with aging is affected by the body’s decline in producing viable stem cells.
Harvesting Stem Cells
Research continues in a wide variety of applications for stem cells. But what does this mean for you? Well, by harvesting your stem cells today, at whatever age you may be, you preserve them at that age to be used whenever you may want or need them. Your young stem cells have the potential to fight age related diseases like heart disease, osteoarthritis, multiple sclerosis, kidney failure, stroke autoimmune diseases, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and more. They can play a role in rejuvenation therapies, and give you a healthier life.
If any of this information tempted you to explore the possibilities of your own stem cells, Wellspring Plastic Surgery can help you. Our own Dr. Langevin has joined with Forever Labs to provide you with the ability to gather and hold onto your current stem cells in case you need them in the future. You can contact us to set up a simple procedure in which Dr. Langevin will harvest your stem cells in a minimally invasive, in-office procedure performed with local anesthetic. It’s a relatively quick procedure with no down time. Sorry to say, you can go back to work that same day! The harvested stem cells are sent directly to Forever Labs to be cryogenically frozen and stored in an FDA-compliant biorepository. There they stay until the day comes that you have use of them.
PRP Skin Rejuvenation
There are also immediate uses for stem cells. They can be used with Platelet Rich Plasma, of PRP. Blood or stem cells are drawn and spun in a centrifuge to obtain an enriched population of platelets and growth factors. That PRP can stimulate the response of the stem cells in your body, assisting in creating new collagen and blood vessels, regenerating and improving damaged skin, and slow down ore even reverse the signs of aging.
At Wellspring Plastic Surgery, we offer PRP Microneedling. Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a facial rejuvenation process that is used to minimize the signs of aging. Issues such as wrinkles, scarring, acne, stretch marks and rosacea can be alleviated through Microneedling. It involves using multiple tiny needles to puncture the skin, prompting the derma (a deeper layer of skin) to rebuild. Growth factors and cytokines are released and stimulate collagen synthesis. When you combine PRP with Microneedling, there is an increased number of growth factors that increases the production of collagen and elastin, which help to repair skin damage and the previously mentioned issues. The results of the Microneedling with PRP tend to be more visible in less time than Microneedling alone.
PRP Hair Loss Treatment
Stem Cell Therapy has also been proven to effectively treat baldness and hair loss for both men and women. A hair follicle is the sheath around the hair root, providing the hair with sustenance. They regenerate themselves over and over, thanks to the activity of the stem cells in our hair and skin. When the follicles stop producing sustenance to that hair root, permanent hair loos or baldness occurred. Stem cells can restore those hair follicles back to their healthy condition, and allow them to grow more hair.
Wellspring Plastic Surgery offers PRP Hair Treatment. This treatment, again, takes your own blood and separates out the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). That plasma is then injected into the area’s in which hair is thinning. This process has been proven to increase hair count, hair thickness, and the growth phase of the hair cycle. Most patients will begin to see results within two to three months.
