RF Skin Resurfacing

RF skin resurfacing combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered beneath the skin’s surface. The controlled treatment stimulates the skin’s natural remodeling response and collagen production, making it an excellent option when the concern is not simply pigmentation, but the quality, texture and firmness of the skin itself. At Wellspring Plastic Surgery we perform it using the Venus Versa™ NanoFractional RF™ applicator. This is a medical procedure rather than a facial, and it is one where the setting and the judgement behind the settings genuinely matter. Yours is planned under the oversight of a board-certified plastic surgeon, in a practice that also treats the complications of this procedure when they happen elsewhere.

SkinPen Microneedling or RF Skin Resurfacing?

We offer both, and they are not interchangeable. SkinPen microneedling works mechanically, creating micro-channels that prompt the skin to repair itself. RF skin resurfacing adds radiofrequency energy delivered through those channels, which produces a thermal effect in the deeper tissue as well. That added energy makes RF resurfacing more effective for textural concerns such as scarring. It also makes it a more significant procedure, with more downtime and more to consider beforehand. Neither is the better treatment in the abstract. The right one depends on what you are trying to change.

How RF Skin Resurfacing Works

Controlled Injury, Controlled Healing

The handpiece places an array of very fine pins into the skin to a set depth, then delivers radiofrequency energy through them. That energy creates precise zones of thermal effect while leaving the surrounding skin untouched. Your body treats those zones as small injuries and repairs them, and the collagen laid down during that repair is what improves texture and skin quality over the following weeks. Depth and energy are adjustable, and choosing them correctly for the area being treated is the entire skill of the procedure. Skin over the cheek tolerates settings that skin near the eye or along the jaw does not. Getting that judgement wrong is where most reported complications with this category of device originate, which is why we treat conservatively and build up rather than starting aggressively.

Is RF Skin Resurfacing Safe?

If you have researched this treatment, you may have come across the FDA safety communication issued in October 2025 about RF microneedling devices. RF skin resurfacing uses that technology, so the communication applies here, and we would rather discuss it with you directly than have you find it elsewhere and wonder why we did not mention it.

The FDA reported serious complications associated with certain uses of these devices, including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage, with some cases requiring surgical repair or other medical intervention. Its evaluation is ongoing. The agency’s central message was that this is a medical procedure, not a cosmetic treatment, and that patients should seek care from a licensed provider with specific training and experience on these devices.

That is not a reason to avoid the treatment. It is a reason to be careful about where you have it done.

What we do about it

  • We treat conservatively. Reported complications are consistently associated with aggressive settings and inexperienced operators. We start conservative and build across your series rather than pushing for a dramatic single result.
  • We assess your history first. A history of keloid scarring, connective tissue conditions or previous facial procedures all change how we approach treatment, and in some cases mean we recommend against it.
  • We tell you the real risks before you consent. Not a disclaimer in small print, but a conversation.
  • There is a surgeon in the building. Wellspring is a board-certified plastic surgery practice. The complications the FDA describes are, in the worst cases, surgical problems. Very few places offering this treatment in Austin can say that.

We will decline to treat you if we do not think this procedure is right for your skin or your history.

RF skin resurfacing is a medical procedure. It carries real risks, including burns, scarring and pigment change. Never have it performed with an at-home device, and only have it performed by a licensed provider trained specifically on the device being used.

What to Expect

Before your treatment

Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner beforehand, and let us know about any medications, recent procedures or history of cold sores. We will review your medical history properly, since some conditions change whether this treatment is appropriate at all.

During your treatment

Skin may look slightly flushed for an hour or two. There is no peeling, no bruising and nothing to hide. You can wear makeup, exercise and go straight back to your day.

The days afterward

Expect redness and a sensation like sunburn for the first day or two, along with mild swelling. A fine grid pattern of tiny marks is normal and typically fades over two to five days. Most people are comfortable returning to work within a couple of days and can wear makeup after about twenty-four hours.

Your results

New collagen takes time to form, so improvement builds over several weeks rather than appearing immediately. Textural concerns such as acne scarring generally need a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, with results continuing to develop for some months afterward.

Results vary from person to person and depend on your skin, what is being treated and how well you follow aftercare. Sun protection during and after your series is essential.

We will assess your skin, explain the risks honestly and tell you whether RF skin resurfacing is the right treatment for what you want to change. Contact us today to schedule your consultation.

Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. They are two names for the same treatment. Very fine pins deliver radiofrequency energy beneath the surface of the skin to prompt collagen production and remodeling. We use the term resurfacing because it describes what the treatment actually does to the skin, and because it is the language of the device’s FDA clearance.

It is a medical procedure with real risks, and it should be treated that way. In October 2025 the FDA issued a safety communication about RF microneedling devices, the technology used here, reporting serious complications including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage, some requiring surgical repair.

Reported complications are consistently associated with aggressive treatment settings and inexperienced operators rather than with the technology itself. The FDA advises seeking care from a licensed provider with specific training on the device being used. We treat conservatively, review your medical history before proceeding, and will decline to treat you if we do not think it is appropriate.

The communication, issued on October 15, 2025, made consumers and providers aware of serious complications reported with certain uses of these devices, which it noted are sometimes referred to as resurfacing, tightening or rejuvenation. Its central point was that this is a medical procedure and not a cosmetic treatment, that it should never be performed with at-home devices, and that patients should discuss the risks and alternatives with a licensed provider before deciding.

SkinPen creates micro-channels mechanically. RF skin resurfacing adds radiofrequency energy delivered through those channels, producing a thermal effect in the deeper tissue. That makes it more effective for textural concerns such as scarring, and also more significant, with more downtime. We offer both and will advise which suits what you want to change.

Different devices in the same category work at different depths and energy levels. The NanoFractional RF applicator we use is a more conservative, resurfacing-oriented platform rather than one of the deepest remodeling devices. That means a shorter recovery and a gentler energy profile, which suits patients who want textural improvement without the most aggressive option available. If you want maximum depth, we will tell you that honestly.

Topical numbing cream is applied first and given time to take effect. Most people describe the treatment as a series of warm pressure points, more noticeable over bony areas such as the forehead and jawline.

Expect redness and a sunburn-like sensation for a day or two, mild swelling, and a fine grid pattern of tiny marks that typically fades over two to five days. Most people return to work within a couple of days and can wear makeup after about twenty-four hours.

Radiofrequency does not target pigment the way light-based treatments do, which makes it usable across a broader range of skin tones than IPL. That said, any procedure creating a controlled injury carries some risk of pigment change, and we will assess your skin and history individually before recommending it.

Textural concerns such as acne scarring generally need a series spaced several weeks apart. The number depends on what is being treated and how your skin responds. We would rather do several conservative sessions than one aggressive one.

Textural scarring is one of the concerns RF skin resurfacing addresses best. Results depend on the type and depth of your scarring, and some scar types respond better than others. We will look at yours specifically and tell you what improvement is realistic.

Some firming can accompany the collagen remodeling this treatment produces, but skin tightening is not its primary purpose. If loose skin rather than texture is your main concern, RF skin tightening or a minimally invasive option such as Renuvion will serve you better, and we offer both.

We approach it cautiously or advise against it for patients with a history of keloid scarring, certain connective tissue conditions, active skin infection in the treatment area, recent isotretinoin use, or during pregnancy. Your consultation will cover your history in detail.

Yes, and often it should be. RF skin resurfacing treats texture and skin quality while IPL treats colour, so pairing them addresses different concerns and produces a more complete result. They are scheduled separately rather than on the same day.
