IPL Photofacial
At Wellspring Plastic Surgery, we offer IPL photofacial treatments using the Venus Versa™ system to clear the sun damage, brown spots and facial redness that years of Central Texas living leave behind. It is one of the most effective ways to even out skin tone with little to no downtime, and because your treatment is planned inside a board-certified plastic surgery practice, what is on your skin gets properly assessed before anything is treated.

How an IPL Photofacial Works
Target the Colour, Leave the Surface Alone
Filtered pulses of light pass through the surface of the skin and are absorbed by whatever is darker than the surrounding tissue: the melanin in a sun spot, or the haemoglobin inside a small dilated vessel. That absorbed energy breaks the target down without disrupting the skin’s surface, which is why there is so little downtime compared with resurfacing treatments.
Brown spots typically darken over the days following treatment before flaking away naturally over roughly one to two weeks. This surprises patients who have not been warned about it, but it is the treatment working. Vessels tend to fade more gradually. Most people see improvement after the first session, with fuller results developing across a series.
Is an IPL Photofacial Right for You?
You are likely a good candidate if you:
- Have brown spots, sun damage or uneven pigmentation
- Have facial redness, broken capillaries or rosacea
- Have discolouration on the neck, chest or hands as well as the face
- Want visible improvement without downtime
- Have fair to medium skin that is not currently tanned
IPL may not be right for you if you:
- Have deeper skin tones, where IPL carries a meaningful risk of pigment change
- Are currently tanned, including from self-tanner
- Are pregnant
- Have taken isotretinoin recently
- Are mainly concerned with texture, lines or laxity rather than colour
That last point is worth expanding on. IPL treats colour, not texture. It will not soften fine lines, tighten skin or improve acne scarring. If those are your main concerns, a resurfacing or tightening treatment will serve you better, and we will point you toward the right one rather than sell you a series that cannot deliver what you are picturing.
Melasma deserves a specific mention. It can look similar to sun damage but behaves very differently, and light-based treatment can sometimes make it worse. If we think what you have is melasma, we will discuss that openly and consider other approaches before recommending IPL.
We assess your Fitzpatrick skin type before treating. If IPL is not appropriate for your skin, we will tell you at your consultation and discuss what would work instead.
What to Expect
Before Your Treatment
Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for at least two weeks. Treating tanned skin significantly raises the risk of burns and pigment change, which in Austin usually means planning your series around your calendar. We will also ask about recent medications, since some increase light sensitivity.
During Your Treatment
A cool gel is applied and the applicator is passed over the treatment area in pulses. Most people describe it as a light snap, similar to a rubber band. A full face takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes.
Afterward
Expect mild redness and warmth for a few hours. Darkened spots are the main visible sign over the following week or two and are usually easy to cover with makeup. If you have an event coming up, schedule at least two weeks beforehand.
Results vary from person to person. IPL clears existing damage but does not prevent new damage. Daily sun protection is what determines how long your result lasts, and in Central Texas that matters more than almost anywhere else.

Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions
It uses intense pulsed light to break down discolouration in the skin. The light is absorbed by brown pigment and by the haemoglobin in small blood vessels, which clears sun spots and reduces visible redness while leaving the skin surface intact.
Most people need a series spaced a few weeks apart. The number depends on how much sun damage you have and how your skin responds. Patients with light, scattered spots often need fewer sessions than those with widespread damage. We will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.
Very little. Expect redness and warmth for a few hours. Brown spots typically darken over the following days and flake away over one to two weeks, which is the treatment working rather than a complication. Most people return to normal activity immediately and can wear makeup the same day.
Most people describe it as a light snap, similar to a rubber band against the skin. A cooling gel is used and the treatment is brief. Areas over bone, such as the upper lip and forehead, tend to be more noticeable.
IPL is one of the better-established treatments for the persistent redness and visible vessels associated with rosacea. It does not cure the condition, and rosacea requires ongoing management, but many patients find it meaningfully reduces background redness. Maintenance treatments are usually needed.
This needs a careful answer. Melasma can look like sun damage but behaves differently, and light-based treatment sometimes makes it worse. If we believe what you have is melasma, we will tell you and discuss other approaches rather than proceeding with IPL by default. Getting the diagnosis right matters more here than the treatment itself.
IPL is best suited to fair and medium skin tones. In deeper skin tones it carries a meaningful risk of pigment change, either lightening or darkening. We assess your Fitzpatrick skin type at consultation, and if IPL is not appropriate we will say so and discuss alternatives.
No. Treating tanned skin, including skin tanned with self-tanner, significantly raises the risk of burns and pigment change. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for at least two weeks beforehand. In Central Texas this usually means planning your series around your calendar.
IPL clears the damage that is already there, but it does not stop new damage forming. How long your result lasts depends largely on sun protection. Many patients schedule maintenance treatments once or twice a year, particularly after summer.
No. A laser emits a single focused wavelength; IPL emits a broad spectrum of light that is filtered for the target. Both can treat pigment and vessels, and neither is universally superior. What matters is matching the technology to your skin and your concern.
Yes, and it often should be. IPL treats colour while microneedling and peels treat texture, so pairing them gives a more complete result than either alone. HydraFacial MD works well for maintenance between IPL sessions.
Adults with fair to medium skin tone who have sun damage, brown spots, facial redness or rosacea, and who are not currently tanned. A consultation will confirm whether IPL is right for you.
