IPL Hair Removal
At Wellspring Plastic Surgery, we offer IPL hair removal using the Venus Versa™ system, a light-based treatment that removes unwanted hair and reduces regrowth over a series of sessions. If you have been researching laser hair removal, IPL is the closely related technology described just below, and we will tell you plainly which one suits your skin. Unlike high-volume clinics that sell standard packages, we plan your treatment around your skin type, your hair and your goals, in a board-certified plastic surgery practice where every plan is reviewed before we treat.

What is IPL Hair Removal?
Areas We Treat
We focus on the face and smaller areas, where precision matters more than volume:
• Upper lip and chin
• Jawline and sides of the face
• Neck and front of the throat
• Between the brows
• Underarms
• Bikini line
• Chest and abdomen
• Back and shoulders
• Legs and arms
Laser Hair Removal vs IPL: What is the Difference?
Most people searching for laser hair removal are really searching for a professional light-based treatment that gets rid of unwanted hair. Laser and IPL are the two technologies that do that. They work on the same principle and they are not the same thing. A laser emits a single, focused wavelength of light. IPL, or intense pulsed light, emits a broad spectrum of wavelengths that is filtered to target hair pigment. Both heat the follicle to disrupt regrowth. Both require a series of sessions. The practical difference is who each one suits. Lasers with longer wavelengths can be used safely across a wider range of skin tones. IPL performs best where there is strong contrast between darker hair and lighter skin. Neither is universally better, and the honest answer to “which is superior” is that it depends entirely on your skin and your hair.
| Laser hair removal | IPL hair removal | |
|---|---|---|
| Light source | A single focused wavelength | A broad spectrum, filtered to the target |
| Best suited to | A wider range of skin tones, depending on the laser | Lighter skin with darker hair |
| Hair colour needed | Pigmented hair | Pigmented hair |
| Sessions required | A series, spaced weeks apart | A series, spaced weeks apart |
| Also treats | Hair only, on most systems | Sun damage, brown spots, redness and acne on the same device |
Wellspring offers IPL hair removal. If your skin type means a laser would serve you better, we will tell you at your consultation.
What we offer at Wellspring.
We use IPL, delivered on the Venus Versa system. We do not offer laser hair removal, and if your skin type means a laser would serve you better, we will tell you at your consultation rather than treating you with the wrong technology. That is a straightforward conversation and it takes two minutes. One advantage worth knowing: because the same Venus Versa system also treats sun damage, brown spots, facial redness and acne, many patients address more than one concern across the same series of visits. A dedicated laser hair removal clinic cannot do that.

How IPL Hair Removal Works
Target the Follicle, Reduce the Regrowth
The applicator delivers filtered pulses of light into the skin. That light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft and converted to heat, which travels down to the follicle and disrupts its ability to produce new hair. Surrounding skin is left intact, and cooling at the surface protects it throughout.
Because only follicles in the active growth phase respond, treatments are spaced several weeks apart so each session catches a different portion of your hair. Treated hairs often appear to grow briefly before shedding over the following one to three weeks. Most areas need a series of sessions, with occasional maintenance afterward.
Is IPL Right for Your Skin Type?
IPL works by targeting pigment in the hair, which means it performs best when there is good contrast between dark hair and lighter surrounding skin. The Venus Versa hair applicators are FDA-cleared for Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV, and we treat within that clearance.
If your skin is Fitzpatrick V or VI, IPL is not the right choice, and we will tell you that at your consultation rather than after you have paid for a package. Devices better suited to deeper skin tones exist, and we would rather point you toward one.
IPL also does not work on white, grey, red or very blonde hair, because there is not enough pigment for the light to target. That is a limit of the technology itself, not of any particular device.
We assess your Fitzpatrick skin type at your consultation. If IPL is not appropriate for your skin or your hair colour, we will say so and discuss what would actually work.
What to Expect
Before Your Treatment
Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for at least two weeks, since treating recently tanned skin raises the risk of pigment change. Shave the area the day before rather than waxing, plucking or threading, because the follicle needs to be intact for the light to reach it.
During and After
Most people describe the sensation as a brief snap of warmth. Mild redness and a feeling like light sunburn are normal afterward and usually settle within a day. Sun protection following treatment is not optional, particularly in Austin.
Results vary from person to person. IPL produces hair reduction, meaning fewer and finer hairs, rather than guaranteed permanent removal of every hair. Hormonal changes can prompt new growth over time.
Spend less time on upkeep, in a practice that treats you carefully.
Our team will assess your skin and hair honestly and build a plan around what will actually work for you. Contact us today to schedule your consultation and find out whether IPL hair reduction is the right fit.
Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions
We offer IPL hair removal rather than laser. The two work on the same principle, heating the hair follicle to disrupt regrowth, but a laser emits a single focused wavelength while IPL emits a broad spectrum filtered to target hair pigment.
Which one is right for you depends on your skin type and hair colour. Lasers with longer wavelengths suit a wider range of skin tones; IPL performs best with darker hair on lighter skin. If a laser would serve you better, we will tell you that at your consultation instead of treating you with the wrong technology.
The Venus Versa hair applicators are FDA-cleared for Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV. If your skin is type V or VI, we will not treat you with IPL and will explain what would be more appropriate instead. We would rather turn a treatment down than deliver a poor or unsafe result.
No. IPL targets the pigment in the hair, so hair without meaningful pigment cannot absorb enough energy for the treatment to work. This is a limitation of the technology itself, and no IPL or laser system on the market overcomes it.
Hair grows in cycles and only follicles in the active growth phase respond, so a series spaced several weeks apart is necessary. The number depends on the area, your hair colour and thickness, and hormonal factors. We will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation rather than a generic figure.
IPL produces hair reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal. The FDA clearance language is “stable long-term or permanent hair reduction,” meaning a lasting reduction in the number of hairs that regrow. Most people need occasional maintenance, particularly for facial hair driven by hormones.
Most people describe a brief snap of warmth. The applicators cool the skin surface during treatment, which makes it considerably more comfortable than older systems. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip are more noticeable but take only minutes.
No. Treating recently tanned skin, including from self-tanner, meaningfully raises the risk of burns and pigment changes. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for at least two weeks before your appointment. In Austin this is worth planning around.
We do not perform IPL hair reduction during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, discuss it with us and with your physician at your consultation.
It often can, though hormonally driven hair tends to be more resistant and more likely to return. We treat it as a medical situation rather than a purely cosmetic one, and we will encourage you to work with your physician on the underlying condition alongside treatment.
Yes. The same Venus Versa system also treats sun damage, brown spots and facial redness, so many patients address more than one concern across the same series of visits. IPL also pairs well with facials, dermaplaning and chemical peels.
Adults with Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV who have dark hair in the areas they want treated, and who are not currently tanned. A consultation will confirm whether IPL is right for you.
