If anyone can appreciate a makeover, it’s a mother. The period following pregnancy is marked by significant changes in body shape. Mothers notice that their favorite jeans or swimsuits do not fit the same as they used to. What many patients will say (and what science supports) is that their breasts are less full and the abdominal wall is less tight. Moreover, a c-section scar can accentuate an irregular contour across the lower abdomen. As a result, patients say that their figure does not accurately reflect the way they feel – vibrant, happy, and energetic.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
The areas most frequently affected by pregnancy are the breasts and the abdomen. Some patients also have stubborn fat deposits in the upper hip and thighs that are resistant to diet and exercise. Accordingly, a “Mommy Makeover” refers to a combination of surgeries that help return a woman’s figures closer to her pre-pregnancy state, and can be a combination of the following:
- Breast augmentation and a tummy tuck
- Breast augmentation with breast lift and a tummy tuck
- Breast reduction and a tummy tuck
- Breast lift with a tummy tuck
- Any of the above, with liposuction
Of course, not all women emerge on the other side of pregnancy wanting or needing surgery. But, for those who do, it is important to keep a few things in mind.
Is it Safe?
Our center puts tremendous emphasis on safety, and one of the first questions that any patient should ask is, “Is it safe?” Absolutely, yes. Our surgeons have frequently performed and extensively studied the combination of abdominal contouring and breast enhancement, and we take further precautions by limiting the extent of liposuction in order to be conservative.
A Mother’s Recovery
I am very busy! What is the recovery? The recovery period after these surgeries complement each other, and recovery for one occurs at the same time as recovering from the other. In fact, one of the reasons that our patients seek a Mommy Makeover is that the recovery for the combined procedures is less than the recovery if the procedures were performed separately. In the first few days, it’s important to protect yourself and arrange for help around the house. Most patients return to work within 2 weeks, and resume more vigorous activity in 4-6 weeks.
Now that I am a mom, I don’t want to look too ‘nipped & tucked’. What will be the biggest changes? The biggest difference you will see is when you are undressed or in a bathing suit. A “Mommy Makeover” addresses three issues:
Breasts: after pregnancy, the breasts can have less volume, excess skin, or both. Breast surgery is then tailored according to these categories in order to restore volume and remove excess skin. This enhances the breast and restores it to a fuller, more youthful state.
Tummy: common complaints in this area are excess skin, abdominal laxity/bulge or both. Many patients are surprised to learn that the rectus (or “six-pack”) muscles can separate from each other. Removing excess skin and realigning the rectus muscles helps draw the waist in, flatten the tummy, and significantly improve the contour of the waistline.
Body contour: following pregnancy, the contour and shape of the hips and thighs can change, and new found fatty deposits may be resistant to diet and exercise. With liposuction, the size of these deposits can be reduced without compromising a shapely figure.
