Botox is the most common cosmetic treatment in the United States, and its popularity is due to its effectiveness as an anti-wrinkle agent. Botox works by blocking the source of the wrinkles—the thin muscle fibers underneath the skin. By selectively blocking these underlying muscles, the overlying wrinkles begin to smooth out.
What does Treatment Entail?
Botox treatment is performed in the office, takes about 30 minutes, and requires minimal down time. It is administered as a series of injections. Results appear around a week and last three to four months. As time passes, the activity of the muscle returns to normal. Patients who are pregnant or breast feeding should not use Botox, and it is important for you to inform our center of any medications you are taking.
What else is Botox used for?
Botox (and specifically, the active protein within Botox) has been used for over 50 years to treat a wide range of medical conditions (such as muscle spasticity or ocular problems). In 2004, Botox was approved for hyperhidrosis (sweating), and can be injected around sweat glands to decrease sweating. In 2010, Botox was approved for migraines. We treat these conditions, as well.
