Before taking the steps towards plastic surgery, we recommend that you research and understand the procedure and implement healthy habits. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle, focusing on health and fitness both before and after surgery ensures your surgery runs smoothly and maintains your results post-procedure. 

Again, we can’t reiterate enough that plastic surgery is not a “quick fix”- particularly for weight loss. However, being physically active and eating well is the only way you will maintain the positive results from your plastic surgery in the long run.

Before surgery 

Before your plastic surgery procedure, you should establish healthy habits. Examples of healthy habits include eating healthy, exercising regularly, cutting back on alcohol intake, quit smoking, etc.

The surgery takes a significant toll on your body, so having your body in optimal health will alleviate or lessen the likelihood of complications during and after surgery.  It will also decrease the amount of time it takes your body to heal and make recovery much faster! 

Let’s go a step further and explain why it is essential to eat healthily and exercise. 

Why is it important to eat healthily? 

According to the Cleveland Clinic, eating a cleaner diet focusing on lean meats, organic fruits, and vegetables will decrease inflammatory markers.

 This is crucial as surgery puts stress on your body, which triggers inflammation and depletes your body’s nutrients. 

As this happens, your immune system may become impaired, and in turn, will increase your chance of post-operative complications. Further, Nourishing your body with the right foods helps your body be more equipped to handle plastic surgery.

Why is it essential to eat exercise regularly? 

Eating clean and exercising go hand in hand as obesity is a significant risk factor in day-to-day life but is correlated with surgery-related complications. For example, obesity prolongs the operation times, leads to more blood loss, and increases the likelihood of you having post-surgery infections. 

Eating clean, exercising regularly, and losing weight is the most straightforward way to ensure your plastic surgery is successful!  

*Even if you don’t have a lot of weight to lose, implementing an exercising habit before surgery will make it much easier to jump back into post-surgery and decrease your recovery time! 

Post-Surgery 

After undergoing plastic surgery, your priority should be rest and proper healing. For the first 48 hours post-surgery, you should be horizontal as much as possible, eating healthy meals and allowing your body space to heal.

Depending on the type of plastic surgery you undergo, it may take a few weeks before you are back on your feet again and cleared to start exercising. Once cleared, take it slow! Then, gradually start adding in activities.

Know that plastic surgery isn’t the “fix” and that you will need to continue to live a healthy and fit lifestyle to see optimal results post-surgery. A huge reason why most people decide to undergo plastic surgery is to improve their quality of life, whether that be their confidence or mobility. So remember your “why” and consider your quality of life.
