TikTok + Plastic Surgery: Trends
Let’s talk about plastic surgery. Arguably, people are opening up and engaging in conversation regarding their plastic surgery procedures and cosmetic enhancements for the first time in history. With the help of celebrities like Kylie Jenner (notably coming out about her lip fillers and launching a billion-dollar makeup company), cosmetic enhancements like injectables and plastic surgery procedures are not only being talked about are now trendy.
You can easily hop on any social media outlet and find thousands of videos documenting the process of Rhinoplasty (nose jobs) and breast augmentation. TikTok is one social media platform, in particular, seeing a rise in trending plastic surgery content.
Likely for a good reason, like the rest of our culture, TikTok is catching on, and plastic surgery is becoming a hot topic on the growing platform, with 689 million active users logging on daily. According to Insider, the hashtag #plastic surgery has over 3.8 billion views.
However, the increasing popularity and awareness surrounding plastic surgery can feel overwhelming, especially if you are interested but new to the world of cosmetic surgeries. Today, we will walk through a few of the trending plastic surgeries found on TikTok and briefly discuss the surgeries, downtime, and what you can expect from the time you contact our office through surgery and until you are safely home recovering.
Rhinoplasty, also widely known as a nose job, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures on TikTok, with millions to billions of views on trending videos. Most of the videos show the patient’s pre-surgery nose, post-surgery bandages during the recovery period, then the reshaped nose.
Further, you can search the hashtag #nosejobcheck displays thousands of similar videos showcasing before-and-after clips of Rhinoplasty surgical procedures. The trend is only gaining in popularity.
Rhinoplasty is primarily used to improve the facial structure, correct a deformity on the nose, or correct breathing problems.
It is important to note a few items regarding the Rhinoplasty procedure.
Although the 15 seconds before and after TikTok videos are charming, people must understand that Rhinoplasty is still a surgery. Therefore, understanding the pros and cons is essential to making an informed decision regarding treatment.
Rhinoplasty procedures are generally available in two primary forms. First, open rhinoplasty is performed if nose reshaping is desired. In this procedure, the surgeon performs a vertical strip incision in between the nostrils that will open a view of the complete nasal anatomy.
If a more moderate reshaping is desired, the surgeon can apply incisions within the nose. The next step is removing the skin from the cartilage and bone of the nose with modifications to the cartilage and bone reshaped, removed, or increased as desired.
Depending on the patient, the procedure can take anywhere from one to two hours.
Recovery will always vary from patient to patient. However, it generally takes roughly six weeks for the bones in your nose to heal following surgery in most patients. You will likely need to take a week or two off work post-surgery and expect to return to work by week three post-operation, and at around week four post-surgery, most patients feel back to normal.
*Between 6 and 12 months, most patients are cleared to get back to contact sports
Trending: Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation videos are exploding on TikTok (look for yourself! #breastaugmentation, #boobjob, #breastimplants). There is even a popular song, “Breast Implants,” created by Larry Reeb that people utilize as a soundtrack to their own breast augmentation TikToks.
Breast augmentation videos feature “before” pictures of users and after images post-surgery. Many users display smaller chest sizes followed by images and videos with visibly larger breasts. Other users display their chests post-surgery and post-second surgery, perhaps changing their previous breast augmentation surgery (i.e., if the first surgery was botched or the user needs a smaller size implant, etc.).

Breast Augmentation Procedure
It is vital to discuss your aesthetic goals with your plastic surgeon in-depth regarding the breast augmentation procedure. This will determine the type of procedure you will undergo and the type of implant used.
However, several options are available regarding the selection of implants, allowing you to customize your breasts’ shape. Customization is achieved with options about implant shape, size, material, texture, and placement. Several options are available regarding the incision site for your implant, including through the armpit incision, underneath the breast incision, through the belly button (endoscopic procedure), and the lower half of the areola.
Again, it is essential to discuss the best approach to the surgery with your breast surgeon.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
After a breast augmentation surgery, most patients can expect to be in recovery for 3 to 7 days. Similar to your initial breast augmentation, you will likely experience mild swelling and bruising for the first week or so. Most will be able to return to work a few days post-surgery and can resume physical activity after three to four weeks (*consult your doctor beforehand).
Around 8 to 12 weeks post-surgery, most women see final results.
Trending: Brazillian Butt Lifts
Unlike breast augmentation and Rhinoplasty, Brazillian Butt Lifts are newer in popularity.
On the TikTok platform, many users document the process from the moment they decide to undergo surgery, including their why, the recovery process, and days post-op.
Brazillian Butt Lifts are also referred to as BBL on TikTok and go by many names—autologous fat grafting, Brazilian Butt Lift, or micro-fat grafting—but the procedure is the same.
Generally, a BBL procedure involves removing and relocating fat cells via liposuction from one part of the body to the buttocks. The transferred fat cells are strategically placed to accentuate a round, firm shape. Tiny incisions are used to perform liposuction, and similarly, small incisions are used to relocate the fat cells.
The procedure takes between two to four hours, give or take.
After undergoing a BBL procedure, you will most likely need to take 1-2 weeks off from work for recovery. After 3-4 weeks, most patients are fully recovered and can expect to return to exercising around eight weeks post-surgery. Again, recovery varies from patient to patient. Always consult your surgeon before returning to normal activities.
