Summer Skin - How to avoid premature aging

Each season affects your skin differently. For example, in the summer, the higher temperatures prompt your skin to release more oils and sweat and increase the likelihood of being outside and prone to sun exposure. Whereas in the cooler months, you have probably experienced skin flaking, dehydration, and windburn due to the elements. 

With all of the extra time spent outdoors enjoying the warm weather, it is increasingly important to take good care of your skin heading into the summer months and throughout summer. Failure to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays and lack of a proper skincare regime can lead to premature aging sun spots and wrinkles. 

Most experts recommend reassessing your skincare regime before the change of each season to ensure you are properly treating your skin! Today, we share a simple but effective way to avoid premature aging,  protect your skin, and maintain a youthful glow even through the summer months! 

Avoid Sun Exposure 

Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays by wearing a dermatologist-approved broad-spectrum SPF of at least 15. Studies show that the sun’s ultraviolet light can cause significant damage to the skin by burning the outer layer of the skin with cells containing the pigment melanin. When the Melanin pigments burn, it reduces your skin’s elasticity, leading to premature aging (i.e., wrinkles and skin sagging. 

Further, if protecting your skin and avoiding premature aging isn’t enough of an incentive to wear sunscreen, the Skin Cancer Foundation also states that by wearing sunscreen, you decrease your risk of developing common skin cancers by about 40 percent and lower your melanoma risk by 50 percent.

Skin Cancer Foundation also recommends that you use an SPF of 15 or higher if you’re inside most of the day with just short intervals in the sun. However, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, especially when and where the sun is most vital, you need an SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant sunscreen. 

Drink water 

Water is essential to your health for a variety of reasons. On a physical level, Water helps flush out waste from your body, regulates your body temperature, and helps improve your brain function. It also helps fight illnesses and improves your blood oxygen circulation.

Further, studies show that adequate water consumption fights premature aging by keeping skin hydrated and promoting collagen production (collagen is the protein that aids in skin elasticity).  

Depending on your size, weight, and gender, you should generally drink between 7 and 15 cups of water per day. However, if you live in a hotter region or are physically active, your water intake should significantly increase.

Avoid Smoking or Excessive Drinking 

If you are an active smoker or excessive drinker, most experts recommend that you either quit or significantly cut back! According to the Mayo Clinic, Smoking can speed up the normal aging process of your skin, contributing to wrinkles and other changes to the appearance of your face due to the toxins in cigarette smoke. 

Alcohol, similar to cigarettes, has several significant impacts on the body and aging. First and foremost, alcohol accelerates skin aging through dehydrating your body. Alcohol can also cause blood vessels at the skin’s surface to dilate, eventually leading to visible red and purple veins according to a recent article by HuffPost. Additionally, alcohol causes dark undereye circles and contributes to diabetes, heart disease, and other neurodegenerative illnesses. 

Microneedling Treatment 

If your budget and schedule allow, invest in microneedling treatments. Microneedling significantly improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, treats uneven skin tones, firms & tightens skin, scar reduction, helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks, reduces enlarged  or visible pores, and helps skin products penetrate and be more effective.
