Wellspring Plastic Surgery is so honored to have the opportunity to volunteer with LEAP Global Missions, an amazing non-profit that brings together talented medical professionals to provide necessary medical care to those who have no access to it.  Wellspring’s very own Dr. Hobar began LEAP in 1991, as a way to help those who didn’t have the resources or access to surgical care to correct issues like cleft lip and palate.  Since then, the program has grown exponentially.  Beginning as a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, LEAP has expanded to include Belize, Haiti, India, and Zimbabwe, as well as offering international disaster relief to areas that need the help. In addition to the Missions Program, LEAP also now offers the Landmark Program, in which children with especially severe facial deformities who require more in depth care than can be given in their home countries, are brought to the United States and cared for through the process of surgical reconstruction and healing.

Drs Cone and Langevin just returned from a 4 day LEAP trip to Haiti.  Our doctors and LEAP have a special bond with the people of Haiti.  It began in 2010 as Dr. Hobar and Dr. Langevin went with LEAP to assist after the devastation of the Haitian earthquake.  They spend tireless days and nights working to save lives; amputating gangrenous limbs and repairing injuries of the victims pulled from the debris in Port-au-Prince.  LEAP sent rotating surgical teams to Haiti for 6 months.  During that time, a close partnership was developed with the local hospital, Hopital Espoir.  Relationships between the LEAP teams, and local doctors, patients, and community members were created.  LEAP committed to bi-annual trips to Haiti, providing ongoing care for their patients, being available to more children with serious surgical issues, and working with the Haitian medical staff to ensure continuous care to previous patients.  Over 240 volunteers have provided free assessments and surgical care to over 1,000 patients in Haiti.  In addition to providing medical volunteers and surgical expertise, LEAP has also helped Haiti by helping to create a safer, more effective hospital. In 2014, LEAP built a brand new Pediatric Ward at Hopital Espoir, and again, in 2016, they built an expanded E.R. and Outpatient Clinic, helping the doctors of Haiti provide a higher quality of care for their patients.

In the mere 4 days Dr. Cone and Dr. Langevin were in Haiti this April, their team performed an amazing 38 surgeries and evaluated approximately 95 patients.  By providing these otherwise impossible surgeries, the LEAP team literally transforms lives and futures- not just those of the patient, but also those of the families.  It is a moving and powerful feeling to be able to help people in such a profound way.

Dr. Cone and Dr. Langevin are looking forward to the next trip, in which they can visit with their friends and patients in Haiti, and help more children.
