Increasing pressures to reflect your best self on social media, or look like your favorite celebrity, are both contributors to the number of plastic surgery procedures being performed worldwide. 2016 stats show those numbers are reaching well into the millions.

So which country racked up the most procedures? According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the United States nabbed the top spot, followed by:

  1. United States
  2. Brazil
  3. Japan
  4. Italy
  5. Mexico

More than 4 million procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2016, with Brazil accounting for 2.5 million.

The statistics also indicate which type of surgeries are most popular in different countries. As certain procedures tend to be favored by a culture as a whole in other parts of the world.

In the U.S., breast augmentation remains the most commonly sought out procedure, while in Brazil, liposuction, abdominoplasty/tummy tuck, and buttocks enhancement are the top choices—likely due to the bikini culture and ever-present swimsuit season there.

In Japan, eyelid surgery is very common, as it is throughout all of Asia.

Medical experts predict that plastic surgery procedures will continue to increase as options become more affordable, and recovery times get shorter.

Make sure if you are considering a procedure to enhance your appearance that you are under the care of a board-certified plastic surgeon.
