How Popsicle’s led to CoolSculpting®, the worlds #1 non-invasive fat reduction treatment.

So, what do popsicles have to do with CoolSculpting® ? It all started in 2009 when a couple of prominent doctors from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. Rox Anderson, noticed that some kids who ate popsicles developed dimples in their cheeks.  The strange phenomenon is known as “popsicle panniculitis.”

Doctors Manstein and Anderson saw the correlation between exposing a part of the body to cold temperatures and a resulting fat loss in that area.  Thankfully for us, they decided to pursue the theory of extreme cold leading to fat loss. Through trial and error, they found that adipose cells (AKA fat cells) were more sensitive to extreme cold temperatures than the surrounding tissue, including nerves, blood vessels, and pigment cells (1). This was very good news. It basically meant that the fat cells could be frozen, and essentially killed, without damaging the skin.  The process is known as Cryolipolysis, or “fat freezing” (2).

This discovery was the origin of CoolSculpting®, the world’s #1 non-invasive fat reduction treatment.  Dr. Manstein and Dr. Anderson discovered the exact temperature that would most effectively crystallize the subcutaneous fat cells without damaging the skin. They then discovered that the frozen adipose cells then exit the body naturally without causing an increase in lipids or cholesterol in the blood.  The body simply disposes of the cells naturally over the course of 2-3 months. The process was found to be a permanent solution to ridding the body of those fat cells.  It has been shown that the initial treatment can decrease the fat in the target area an average of 22% for the first treatment.  Two treatments are recommended for most individuals, and can lead to an overall fat loss of up to 50% for the treated area.

The process of CoolSculpting® was approved by the FDA in 2010 and has quickly become the premier non-invasive treatment of stubborn fat. It is the most advantageous for the areas on the body that seem impervious to diet and exercise.  A quick, one-hour treatment, and watch the fat melt away.
