Facial Fillers

One of the most gratifying experiences for patients is the immediate and nonsurgical correction of bothersome facial wrinkles and folds.  Facial fillers, such as Juvederm XC, Boletero, and Voluma, are powerful tools in achieving this result.  A youthful face is one that is characterized by good skin quality and proportional facial volume.  Loss of facial volume occurs as a normal part of aging, and deepens smile lines and marionette lines while decreasing fullness over the cheekbones.  In the hands of an experienced practitioner, facial fillers restore this volume and generate a natural and more youthful look.

How do Fillers Work?

The most commonly used fillers are composed of a protein found naturally in skin and soft tissue called hyaluronic acid, or HA.  This protein binds to water, and serves to hydrate, soften, and volumize.  Some HA products optimize the health of skin and others optimize the deeper, structural layers of the face. Treatments involve guiding a very fine needle within the target area of the skin and face where deep lines and folds develop.

Is it Safe?

The popularity of HA products is due in part to their effectiveness and in part to their safety profile.  Most side effects, such as redness or pain at the injection site, bruising, lumps or bumps, and discoloration, resolve within 1 week.  While the risk of infection is low, it is important to inform our doctors of any persistent or increasing redness.  Several of the products contain lidocaine to make the procedure more comfortable. In most cases, facial filler treatments take less than 30 minutes. Depending on the product, the results last between 6 and 18 months.

What is a “Liquid Facelift”?

Fillers provide a powerful, nonsurgical method of diminishing facial wrinkles and folds, and of accentuating the cheekbones.  HA has a gelatinous consistency, and accordingly, a comprehensive treatment session is sometimes referred to as a “liquid lift.”  In select patients it can provide some of the benefits of a facelift without the downtime of a facelift, and results last between 6 and 18 months depending on which filler is used.  The ideal candidates are those who either desire a lift but are not yet candidates for a full facelift or those who want to avoid the downtime of surgery.  Despite being non-surgical, the “liquid lift” is not without limitations and risks, and our doctors can help you decide if it is right for you.

Can Botox & Fillers be used Together?

Yes, Botox and fillers can be safely combined.  The most common example is when Botox is used to smooth wrinkles in between and around the eyebrows and crows feet, and filler is used to accentuate the cheek bones and diminish the nasolabial fold and marionette lines.
