Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breasts, just as any part of the human body, eventually lose their elasticity. Breast lifts are often a great solution to sagging breasts due to age or childbirth. This procedure is performed to improve the shape and firmness of breasts. It involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

A breast lift can be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation or nipple reconstruction. This surgery can take between two to three and a half hours.

There are two options to breast lift procedures.

  • The most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision around the natural contour of the breast.
  • The doughnut mastopexy (concentric) involves creating an incision around the areola a removing a doughnut-shaped area of skin.

The number and length of incisions depends on how much of a lift a patient needs. If the amount of lift necessary is considerable, the anchor-shaped incision is usually preferred.

The anchor-shaped option involves three different incisions; around the areola, vertically from the nipple to the bottom of the breast and along the underside of the breast. These incisions will create flaps from which excess skin will be removed.
